Crohn's Disease :: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Ulcerative Colitis
Accutane (isotretinoin) is a drug that was developed by Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. for treating severe cystic (nodular) acne. Accutane is also marketed under the names Roaccutane, Amnesteem, Claravis and Sotret.
Accutane is known as a retinoid, and is a synthetic form of Vitamin A. Accutane was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1982.
U.S. Congressional Hearings
In July 2004, the US. Congress held a congressional hearing - the second in three years - to evaluate the effect Accutane had on pregnancies. The Congress decided that certain steps were needed - similar to those implemented for thalidomide - in the FDA regulation of Accutane treatment.
U.S. FDA Action
In July 2005, the FDA issued an alert with regard to Accutane treatment based on continued reports of suicide and attempted suicide associated with the use of Accutane (isotretinoin). The report cautioned that patients should stop Accutane (isotretinoin) and they or their caregiver should contact their healthcare professional right away if the patient had any of the previously-mentioned symptoms.
Accutane Health Concerns
According to many reviews and reports, Accutane treatment may have a number of long term and serious side effects, including:
According to a report from the Journal of Gastroenterology (JOG), the Physician's Desk Reference lists inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as a possible adverse event associated with the use of isotretinoin (accutane), a popular prescription medication for treatment of acne. (reviewed reports of IBD associated with isotretinoin use).
It appears from the conclusion in the article in JOG, that the adverse reports filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) via the MedWatch system between 1997 and 2002 show isotretinoin (accutane treatment) might serve as a trigger for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
