DePuy Hip Implant

The DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson and Johnson, is recalling its ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System (as early as March 2010 - letter to Doctors).

Health care professionals have increasingly been warning about problems with metal-on-metal hip implants, which can shed metal particles into the body. The particles can damage soft tissue, cause inflammatory reactions and lead to bone loss.

Some available data has suggested that the DePuy ASR hip failure rate at five years is between 12% and 13% (one out of every 8 patients), and may be even higher among women and those who received a device with a smaller head (under 50mm). With tens of thousands of the DePuy metal hips sold, this means that thousands of people may experience problems with the DePuy ASR hip resulting in the need for revision surgery.

Patients could experience a variety of symptoms, such as: hip pain, swelling of the hip and problems walking.

These symptoms may be a sign of a problem with the DePuy ASR Hip, such as loosening of the hip implant, fracture of the bone around the implant, or dislocation of the two parts of the hip implant that move against each other.

Apparently, the Depuy Orthopedics voluntarily recalled the ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System used in hip replacement surgery due to the number of patients who required a second hip replacement procedure, called a revision surgery. These "metal-on-metal" hip implants can shed particles into the patient causing serious, painful reactions, often leading to further surgery.

If you or a loved one have undergone total hip replacement surgery, please contact us for a free, no-obligation consultation to determine whether you have a claim for financial compensation against Depuy.
