MESOTHELIOMA

Screening :: Diagnosis :: Staging

SCREENING and DIAGNOSIS

It is very important to seek immediate medical help if you have any signs and/or symptoms that may point towards mesothelioma.

Your doctor may order other tests to determine the cause of your signs and symptoms, including:

  1. Chest X-ray
  2. Chest or abdominal CT scan
  3. Biopsy
  4. Fine-needle aspiration
  5. Thoracoscopy
  6. Laparoscopy
  7. Thoracotomy
  8. Laparotomy

STAGING OF MESOTHELIOMA

Once mesothelioma is diagnosed, your doctor orders other tests to determine the extent of the cancer and whether it has spread — a process called staging.

Imaging procedures allow doctors to see inside your chest or abdomen to determine the stage of mesothelioma. Options include:

  1. Stage I mesothelioma is considered localized cancer – usually in the area of the chest or abdomen
  2. Stage II mesothelioma is considered advanced cancer – affecting the mesothelium or lungs or the diaphragm.
  3. Stage III mesothelioma is also considered advanced cancer – affecting the same area as Stage II and may have spread to the lymph nodes.
  4. Stage IV mesothelioma is an advanced cancer that has spread to other areas of the body – possibly the brain and areas of the lung that are away from the tumor.
